ANT GROUP UNVEILS ITS HUMANOID ROBOT WITH ITS OWN AI "BRAINS" CHALLENGING TESLA'S OPTIMUS

The R1 Humanoid Robot

The robot, called R1, was presented as capable of performing tasks such as guiding tours, sorting medicine in pharmacies, providing medical consultations, and carrying out basic kitchen work. Unlike many rivals that focus primarily on hardware, Ant is concentrating on developing the “brains” of humanoids through advanced artificial intelligence.

Strategic AI Integration

Ant positions humanoid robots as a gateway to popularizing AI chatbots and assistants. Its large AI model, BaiLing, is designed to handle end-to-end planning for complex tasks. According to the company, the R1 can plan and execute jobs such as preparing and serving meals, and theoretically learn new recipes and adapt to different tools.

The R1’s spatial perception system can identify relationships between objects, enabling it to operate in varied environments such as kitchens or pharmacies.

Development and Suppliers

The R1 is assembled with components sourced from Chinese suppliers. These include joint modules from Ti5 Robot and a chassis developed by Galaxea AI, a company backed by Ant.

Position in Global Robotics

China already leads in industrial robot deployment per capita compared with the United States and Japan. Companies such as Tesla with its Optimus project, and robotics startups like Unitree, are also active in humanoid development.

Ant Group’s Broader AI Efforts

While Ant Group is best known for its Alipay digital payments platform, the company has been investing heavily in artificial intelligence. Its initiatives include developing the BaiLing large language model and experimenting with training it on locally made semiconductors to reduce costs.
