Wikipedia's human pageviews dropped 8% year-over-year in recent months, according to data from the Wikimedia Foundation. The decline follows an update to the site's bot detection systems, which revealed inflated traffic figures in May and June from undetected automated visits.
The primary drivers are shifts in user behavior: search engines now deliver answers via generative AI summaries, reducing clicks to source sites like Wikipedia, while younger users turn to social video platforms for information. "Search engines are increasingly using generative AI to provide answers directly to searchers rather than linking to sites like ours," said Marshall Miller, Wikimedia Foundation's vice president of product. He added that younger generations favor social video over traditional web searches.
This erosion in traffic poses operational risks. Fewer visits mean fewer volunteer contributions to content and reduced individual donations, which fund the nonprofit's work. Miller noted: "With fewer visits to Wikipedia, fewer volunteers may grow and enrich the content, and fewer individual donors may support this work." The foundation relies on these dynamics to sustain its model, where revenue from banners and appeals supports global operations without ads or paywalls.
Data from Miller's October 17 blog post highlights the trend after stripping out bot activity. Wikimedia is responding by developing content attribution frameworks for AI users, expanding outreach teams, and recruiting volunteers. That means that people are reading the knowledge created by Wikimedia volunteers all over the internet, even if they don’t visit wikipedia.org— this human-created knowledge has become even more important to the spread of reliable information online.
