The U.S. Department of Labor is taking bold steps to equip the American workforce with the skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven economy. The Employment and Training Administration issued new guidance to states, detailing how Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) grants can be used to enhance artificial intelligence (AI) literacy and training within the public workforce system. This initiative aligns with President Trump’s Executive Order, “Advancing Artificial Intelligence Education for American Youth,” and focuses on integrating AI literacy into WIOA Title I programs for Youth, Adult, and Dislocated Workers. The guidance encourages state and local workforce development boards to leverage WIOA funding to provide workers with foundational AI skills. Additionally, states are urged to tap into governor’s reserve funds to embed AI learning opportunities into existing programs. “President Trump’s vision to Make America Skilled Again empowers states and local governments to use federal resources efficiently, preparing workers for high-demand, well-paying jobs,” said Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer. “This guidance delivers on that commitment, putting American workers first.” Deputy Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling emphasized the transformative impact of AI on the job market. “AI is creating entirely new job categories, many of which are high-paying and don’t require a four-year degree,” he said. “AI literacy is the key to unlocking opportunities in this evolving economy, and this guidance ensures more Americans can gain the skills they need to succeed.” The Department of Labor’s broader strategy, outlined in its report America’s Talent Strategy: Building the Workforce for the Golden Age, underscores the importance of preparing workers for the economic prosperity AI promises.
