Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. has launched sales of its inaugural smart glasses, powered by its Qwen AI models, entering consumer hardware for the first time.
The Quark S1 model features translucent displays that overlay contextual data onto the user's field of view. It includes cameras, bone conduction microphones, and swappable batteries with a 24-hour rating. This positions the product as a direct competitor to Meta Platforms Inc.'s $299 Ray-Ban smart glasses in the Chinese market.
The release aligns with Alibaba's shift toward an AI-centric model. Last week, the company rolled out its Qwen app, merging multiple consumer AI tools into one platform that gained over 10 million users in days. CEO Eddie Wu reported strong user retention. Alibaba has embedded Qwen into its Quark browser and now extends it to wearables.
The S1 starts at 3,799 yuan ($537). A stripped-down Quark G1, priced at 1,899 yuan and lacking micro-OLED displays, launches alongside. Both are available immediately on Tmall, JD.com, ByteDance Ltd.'s Douyin, and over 600 stores in 82 Chinese cities. International rollout follows in 2026, including AliExpress.
China's smart glasses market has expanded, with AI features like real-time transcription driving growth. IDC tracked 1.6 million shipments through September, led by Xiaomi Corp. at about one-third share; including display-equipped units pushes the total to 2 million. Startups like Even Realities focus on enhancements to standard eyewear.
Meta's $799 Ray-Ban Display variant introduces screens and a wristband for gestures, though it's bulkier and costlier. This sets a benchmark for category evolution.
Alibaba leverages its ecosystem for integration: Taobao for shopping, Fliggy for travel, and Alipay for payments. Partnerships with NetEase Inc. and Tencent Holdings Ltd. add NetEase Cloud Music and QQ Music access.
For investors, this hardware push tests Alibaba's AI monetization beyond software. With China's market at scale and global plans underway, it could diversify revenue streams amid e-commerce pressures. Track Qwen user metrics and sales uptake for early signals.
